The keto diet, or ketogenic diet, is a low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet that is used both for weight loss and muscle bulking as well as in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy. 

The keto diet shares many similarities with other low-carb diets, such as the Atkins diet, and involves putting the body into ketosis, which is a metabolic state in which the body becomes more efficient at burning fat and supplying energy for the brain. 

A Diet For Combatting Epilepsy 

Though the keto diet is known today as a weight loss diet, it was actually developed to help treat and prevent epilepsy. The term “ketogenic” wasn’t really used until the 20th century, though historians believe that civilizations going back as far as the Ancient Greeks would often use similar diets to treat a variety of diseases. 

The story behind the keto diet comes from France in the early 20th century. Studies done surrounding the use of low-calorie diets for epilepsy patients reviewed that the patients ended up having fewer seizures when on the eating regiment. 

The high-fat, low-carb diet lowered blood sugar but ended up not proving to have lasting effects for these patients who would end up having more seizures after returning to their regular eating habits. 

Because of this, Mayo Clinic doctor Dr. Wilder officially created the “ketogenic diet” that could help keep individuals suffering from epilepsy at healthy blood sugar levels, thus more consistently reducing the number of seizures they had. 

A Ketogenic Diet 

There are a variety of keto diets, including: 

  • The standard ketogenic diet
  • The cyclical ketogenic diet
  • The targeted ketogenic diet 
  • The high-protein ketogenic diet 

Typically, the foods needed to follow a ketogenic diet include: 

  • Meat
  • Fatty fish 
  • Butter and cream
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Healthy oils
  • Avocados
  • Vegetables 

Along with eating these kinds of foods, it’s strongly recommended that those following the keto diet keep up with regular exercise. 

The diet can be varied by using any number of different dairy, meat, and vegetable products. It can also be modified to accommodate any other eating restrictions and allergies and is fairly flexible depending on the follower’s goals and needs. 

Becoming More And More Popular 

Most instances of the keto diet in the news revolve around recent stories in which people have lost quite a bit of weight on the diet. Large news outlets have been reporting on success stories with the keto diet over the last several months, as the diet becomes ever0more popular with various communities throughout the world. 

A Cholesterol-Heavy Diet 

Something to know about the keto diet is that some researchers have found that it has a potential risk for the LDL cholesterol levels in some individuals.

As with any diet, it’s important to speak with healthcare professionals before following the keto diet, as there is still research being done into the adverse effects that may come with following the diet over time. 

Celebrities On The Keto Diet 

Celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Vinny Guadagnino, and Briana Culberson have said that they have lost quite a bit of weight from being on the keto diet. They have shared their successes with fans via social media, voicing their opinions on the successes of the diet. 

A Diet That Is Gaining Popularity 

Though research is still being done into the efficacy of the veto diet, it is quickly becoming popular. As more and more people turn towards ketogenic ways of eating, it’s likely that this particular diet will remain popular for quite a while.
