How To Prevent Kidney Stones

Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be incredibly painful solid deposits that form in your kidneys.

Though these stones might start small, they can grow into much larger deposits that end up resulting in difficulty going to the bathroom. The good news is that there are ways to avoid this buildup and save yourself from having kidney stones!

Know Your Risk Factors

There are some individuals who are at higher risk for kidney stones. This includes risks due to genetics, age, gender, weight, and other health concerns that you might be facing.

If you’re not sure about these, talk to both relatives and your doctor about what your risks might really be. This can help you start on the path to preventing kidney stones early, and potentially keep you from having any at all even if you happen to be more likely to get them.

Give Your Body The Water It Needs

One of your best defenses against kidney stones is keeping yourself hydrated. You should be drinking plenty of water each day, especially if you’re exercising regularly or if you’re battling an illness.

Water is the best way to stay hydrated, so even if you’re drinking other fluids you’ll want to make sure your water intake is high.

You’ll also want to keep your sodium consumption to a low. Sodium can dehydrate you and reverse the replenishing effects that water can have. Say no to salt-heavy foods, sauces, and salad dressing, instead opting for low-sodium alternatives.

Eat A Balanced Diet

Eating well can help protect your body from a myriad of things – and kidney stones are just one of them! Make sure you’re eating a diet that isn’t too heavily focused on animal products and includes ample amounts of fruits, veggies, and nuts.

Know Your Body

If you’re in tune with your body, you’re already taking the first step towards preventing things like kidney stones. As long as you’re taking good care of your body – from proper nutrition to consistently hydrating – you’ll find that you are kidney stone-free!
